Reviews for Fernandez Must Die (#1739)

Review by The Dean of Games on 30 Jan 2012 (Rating: 2)

1988 Image Works (UK)

One of the last games I bought.
I really hated this one, but now seeing it for the first times in decades (decades!!! Wow, I'm old!) it doesn't seem all that bad. At least it's playable.
But it's not good either, taking into account other better games out there, so I still rate it under average. Colour clashing is awful, the sprites are bad, basic sounds, and the game play is the only savior Fernandez gets.

A clone of Commando where you must liberate a stereotypical South American country by killing its dictator, Fernandez. You can go around on foot or fetch one of the many jeeps lying around, and get rid of Fernandez's countless henchmen with bullets and hand grenades.

Unfortunately the game does not excel in anything: graphics and sound are bland to say the least, and enemies pose a threat for their quantity only, since they look and behave the same.

Good for some quick blasting fun, but rather shallow and uninspiring in the long run. I doubt you'll have the patience to go all the way to Mr. Fernandez.

Like Commando but much worse .

Weird key disposition .

Utterly unattractive presentation .

Clearly below average and close to the very bottom .

Commando clone with a plodding pace. Things improve once you take control of one of the many vehicles dotted around as the pace improves considerably. Be careful not to run over a mine as you'll be back on foot again and this time you'll really notice the slow pace. It's also possible to get stuck on the scenery and all you can do is wait to be killed, except in the game I'm still playing, I've been stuck for 10 minutes whilst the enemies mill about taking no notice of me!

A pretty poor Commando-style game. Hated the player sprite with the big patch of red surrounding him as he moves, surely there was a way to avoid that. The gameplay's pretty rubbish too. Not terrible, just not very good.

I don't know, this is a bit bad, with your main sprite suffering from one of the gravest cases of colour clash, although you may pretend he's just awfully bleeding, and the game doesn't seem to go anywhere, it's a sort of Ikari Warriors/Commando, vertical scrolling (with a bit of flip screen on the side), where you shoot hundredgs of enemy soldiers and you can drive a jeep. It certainly can't be said that it's unplayable.
