Reviews for Bozxle (#27065)

This is a variation on the Boxxle/Sokoban puzzle game.
Sokoban is compulsive, and is presented beautifully in this version for the Spectrum. The game is displayed in splendid attribute beating 8x1 rainbow colour, and control is satisfyingly instant. All wrapped up with nice title screens and music.
Levels are based on the smaller boards from Boxxle, making it a distillation of interesting layouts and snappy gameplay. This 'just works' as a spectrum game for me, holding my attention for a lot longer than most.

Even though the treatment of colour is marvellous, this game was launched in 2011, if it had been launched in 1984 it would have been an all time classic and would have elevated the level of the spectrum games.

The game course is simple...this has nothing but a marvelous treatment of the colour.
Rainbow colours on spectrum...great, but this time not enough.

I don't really like Sokoban much, that reflects on my feelings for this game, it's a bit naff. I mean it's looks nice and it looks proper, but I've never got on with Sokoban's gameplay and this is no exception. But the one thing I don't understand is you have a fire button, and what does this fire button do? It quits the game, when there's a separate quit button, so why the flipping hell have you given me TWO quit buttons? Very odd indeed. Also I played another Sokoban-type game called Flappy a while ago and this is no better than that. Oh look I seem to have found a third quit button as a matter of fa oh wait that was the reset button, ahem never mind.

I am a fan of puzzle games, although Sokoban and its clones are not among my favorites of the genre. That said, Bozxle, an unofficial conversion of Boxxle, i.e. the Sokoban game released for the Nintendo Game Boy in 1989, is a title worth considering. Made using the ZXodus engine, predecessor of the better known Bifrost and Nirvana, Bozxle looks pleasing although sprite animation and sound are both very limited.
One of the best renditions of the classic crate-pushing puzzle on the Spectrum in my opinion.
