Reviews for Atom Ant (#312)

Review by Morkin on 05 Feb 2012 (Rating: 3)

Loosely based on the Hanna-Barbera cartoon of the same name, this offering sees Atom Ant collecting bombs and dropping them into a bomb de-fuser at the top of a series of building.

The cartoons revolved around the theme of Mr Ant possessing phenomenal strength despite being a micro dot, though in this game he's a lot bigger and can be hurt by the flying and falling nasties on the nicely designed buildings. I couldn't quite figure out why he wasn't able to catch the falling weights/safes as it was the sort of thing he'd do in the cartoon, but I suppose it wouldn't be much of a challenge if he was invincible.

Anyway, it's a reasonably playable game, quite polished, though a bit repetitive. The background graphics are well designed, perhaps a spot of colour on the different levels might have been nice.

I bought this as a kid.....and it never frickin worked! But still I've managed to play this after about 20 odd years and it's a pretty nice game, simple concept yet not so simple gameplay. Quite enjoyable but definately not the most enjoyable Hanna-Barbera game on the Spectrum, nor the best looking it has to be said.

Another Hanna Barbera cartoon I've never heard of. For some unknown reason Mr Ant has to collect bombs and deposit them at the top of a building. It's a little bit like Bomb Jack but not as good. But it is a reasonably entertaining Hanna Barbera game and that's something I never thought I'd say.

Pretty entertaining rendition of HB's Atom Ant cartoons. I think the series of games based on HB classics were released a bit too late. The Spectrum gold era had already passed and this cartoons were already a bit too dated. Nonetheless they were still popular and the idea proved good. Atom Ant plays quite nice and it's very enjoyable. I know I would have liked it if it was released around 1985. It's impossible, of course, not to compare the game to Bomb Jack, although the two in the end don't match well.

Bomb JacksĀ“ poor relative ...

2,5 / 5 .

Its quite a cute jump em up, with more precision platforming and less controlling the mayhem than Bombjack, and it loses a lot vs Bombjack by having less fluidity in its gameplay.

As the first reviewer said, the game is hardly more than a graphical nod to the micro super hero Atom Ant, which though a lesser known comic hero, would have great potential for fun in a game where super strength could be used vs suitably massive enemies.

An opportunity missed, and even ignoring that the game that is presented can best we described as worthy rather than exciting.

I was pretty amazed to see the other scores for this game because it's what I have to give it as well. It's not bad but the movement is quite awkward and it seems too easy to hit an enemy. It was fun at first but then it died out.

Another Hanna-Barbara game from Hi-Tec and Twilight and it's another good one. The graphics are not great it has to be said but the gameplay works well enough to enjoy it. Are there Bomb Jack similarities? Yes. But it's not a direct clone. The gameplay is slow paced and repetitive but it works and is enjoyable. Not a standout game in the Hi-Tec Hanna-Barbara range, but a nice one nevertheless.
