Reviews for Paperboy (#3603)

One of the first software houses to get into the coin op conversions business - that was going to change the Spectrum games industry, and not for better - was Elite who, anyway, was able to produce a streak of good renditions, of which Paperboy was part of.

The concept/gameplay, throwing papers into the postboxes of the neighborhood dodging various obstacles, is not one of the most exciting, and the programming doesn't present any outstanding feature, but there's enough fun to keep you playing for a while.

Nice version of the arcade classic. Retains the same gameplay with nicely detailed but monochrome graphics. All in all I always enjoyed this game and always look forward to playing it.

While not the best conversion out there it sure is just as playable and just as fun. Always full of enjoyment and thrills.

"What a jerk I am", those were some of the unforgettable words that would appear at the top of the screen as the titular paperboy crashed his bike for the umpteenth time. Something else that was unforgettable was the jolly tune that would play at the start of the game.
Paperboy is a game that I go back to time and again. It's not perfect but it's a good game and has a lot of charm.

I never fancied this game but I must admit that the Spectrum version of Paperboy got something ...

The closest to this game I know is Trashman, at least in relation to the plot. But unlike the garbageman, I always felt a bit cheated by this. It's hard to steer the bike accurately, 'cause the crash collision routine is badly implemented. And if the monochrome graphics don't bother me much, some characters are hard to figure out what they are. In fact, only after playing the arcade, I then realized that the weird spaceship-like object with an antenna on it's back was actually a three wheeled bike. I think the inlay cover and the loading screen steered my imagination much better than the actual game. Even so, it's a good arcade game, but I was expecting much more.
