Reviews for Commando (#9325)

Review by Stack on 20 Feb 2009 (Rating: 5)

In 1985 we never really expected to see such a detailed, pacy and bold arcade conversion for the 48K Spectrum.
Commando, the classic run and shoot game was there for all to play at home and without a pocket full of 10p coins. The end of level overwhemimg riot and bullet spray was present and correct on the Speccy.
A host of imitators followed. Each one failed to meet the high playability watermark of Commando.
The task in Commando looks 'against all odds' but you just know that you can get past the next stage if you practice. The balanced challenge in Commando is just right making its appeal unlikely to diminish rapidly.

yeah, just as Stack says.

Probably not the best shot'em up technically, but surely it's one of the most enjoyable.

I love this game: easy to play, hard to master, and every technical or visual aspect is good enough to achieve the goal: Pure gameplay.

This has to rate as one of my top 10 on the Speccy.

A vertical shoot'em based on the coin-op Commando.

The playability was excellent, the graphics were good and the nine levels were challenging.

Avoid the soldiers in ditchs, tanks, huts and cannon balls and fight the bases at the end of each level.

Rapid fire and amazing that the managed to fit it all into a 48K machine when you look back at it.

Really good and worth a play.

You play Super Joe, the crack combat soldier equipped with only an M60 machine
gun and six hand grenades.
Your quest is to defeat the enemy rebel forces while penetrating further the enemy lines.

What a game this was in the arcade machines. Me and my buddy walked miles just to get to the nearest arcade.

I still remember our conversations about how cool it would be if this game existed on the spectrum, and then... MAGIC!
A few weeks later there it was on the shelves!!

Still one of the spectrum best games ever.

Along with bomb jack and hyper sports this would be the best of all the arcade conversions on the spectrum.

As a lone trooper with just a gun and a few grenades you're dropped off in a war torn jungle ready for action.

A vertical scrolling all action shoot em up with smooth graphics , a tough challenge and decent level design.

Theres not much more to say really as its such a basic style of game but sometimes the best ideas are the simplest and the game is simple to perfection.

I will make a stand for Commando.

Considering that I have never really liked action games very much I must admit that Commando is highly playable and agreable to watch.

The graphics are ok, and the game is quite challenging. As you advance through a forest of enemies you really got the feeling of being a hero !!!

This and Rambo are two cool games that are still enjoyable even today. Especially Commando, which I find has aged pretty well.

A great conversion of the arcade game. A vertical shoot'em up where you must advance through the enemy lines, in a jungle full of baddies, crossing trenchs, roads, bridges or camps. A gun and a bunch of grenades are the only arms against all of them.

The graphics are not the best point but the sound, the smooth scroll and the level of difficulty produce a very addictive game with a great playability. A Spectrum classic.

Another one of Elite's highly impressive arcade conversions. Just about as accurate as the original, even down to the difficulty. I was never ever good at this game.

Good, but I'd rather who dares wins II
