I think 'This' to be the closest version to the absolute original, that is the one from Alexey Pajitnov. After all, it has the licence. This monumental game is the most well known all time entertainment software, platform aside, so that speaks volumes about it.
You can add pacman or the Mario saga. This ZX version had a great reception. No doubt, very well ported to the Spectrum capabilities. Could it be better? Sure, but It ' s also more than decent

Arkanoid, 12 Apr 2020 (Rating: 5)

Great, fine conversion of the Taito mega classic. In fact, the Best Ballbreaker Spectrum could offer. Perfect for a short try, waiting for bus or whatever

The Sentinel, 08 Jul 2020 (Rating: 5)

This is a videogame difficult to understand today, if only for the 1-bit color graphical presentation. But there's more, because it is slow and confusing.
But it was a revolution.

Let's start: it laid the foundation for true three-dimensionality (at least on limited 8-bit computers). It tried to bring the complex experience of first-person action to a machine based on a Z80 microprocessor. With limitations (the rendering is not in real time, the scene is memorized and displayed "fisheye"-style), but in its own way it did.

An enormous merit that should not be neglected.

As far as gameplay is concerned, programmers knew how to masterfully compensate such inevitable limitations, for the enormous ambition of what they wanted to achieve.

It brought an experience never seen before. All in all, a masterpiece for the puzzle games

give it a try if you want a true challenge!!

Nether Earth, 17 Aug 2020 (Rating: 5)

Another non conventional videogame that appeared on the 8-bits computers.

As you can see, I tend to assess non conventional games, like puzzle ones; and we all can agree, this is one of the most inspiring action games in the Spectrum.
In fact, its true genre is Real time strategy. Maybe the first of its class.
That alone is enough to hold this software in the highest regard, and so, it should be evaluated in the most generous way. But it also has a very original pseudo 3D view, the sound effects are more than acceptable and its playability shines.
All in all, a true forgotten gem.

This is a magnificent little wonder, which is hidden among so much arcade game and such. Fully recommended for children or for those looking for logic, strategy or just something different, elegant and brimming with quality.

It's able to bring much more life to puzzles and logic to the Sinclair machine perfectly fitted to its limitations.

Brilliant and elegant presentation and graphics.

Ghosts 'n Goblins, 06 Sep 2020 (Rating: 5)

I'd like to make a special mention to this all time classic.
Unforgetable

Archon, 19 Sep 2020 (Rating: 4)

Such a great game!!
It deserves to be well remembered even today.
Ancient hardware fits well with this type and vice-versa

DreamWalker: Alter Ego 2, 09 Oct 2020 (Rating: 5)

That's a very special game because Altough it's almost an arcade, it enjoys a very unusual approach.
You must play with your character but he/she must look after the reflex ("alternative myself/alter ego") but not in another dimension or whatever, in fact in the same one, but symmetrically and always in any of the possibles axis.
Guide them through magnificently designed levels alternating Which of them you control.
Instant classic...

Sir Fred, 16 Oct 2020 (Rating: 4)

For 1986, with so much trash of little originality coming out at times, it is a very good twist of the adventure genre

It's true This doesn't offers you more on the exploration side, but that's not its point, being more the variety of movements and actions, the show of ability and the classic skills an arcade adventure requires. And overall, the search for solutions to advance.

Fortunately, This game also has its puzzle-solving side !!!

Therefore, in terms of originality, this game stands out more than the average.

It does not seem, in principle, a marvel of those that make history, but if you get involved a little in its gameplay (rather than in its plot, because it is simple) you discover what it shines in it.

And yes, it is true that the best testimony of its quality is the extremely high level reached by the masterpiece of its main programmer.

...go and take a look at the best tribute "The name of the rose" could have !!.

La Abadia del Crimen + Sir Fred, 21 Oct 2020 (Rating: 5)

The perfect excuse to talk about 2 mythical couples of videogame designers: Paco Menéndez / Juan Delcán and
Jon Ritman / Bernie Drummond

I see an equivalence or parallelism between these 2 pairs:
The genius of the programmer was not only perfectly complemented by the magic of the artist but the final result was far superior to the sum of both.

You can also see a process of improvement and progress in his works; the experience led them to their respective top works.

In particular, they clearly excelled in the ever demanding and difficult isometric world.

In addition, they pushed the limits of the machine to new frontiers, but not as a simple technical deployment, but as the means to carry out its ambition and originality.

In particular, this compilation with Abadía del Crimen / Sir Fred manages to attract the interest not only of any videogame fan but also of those curious who expect to see a display of unusual abilities

Buzzsaw+ (Foxton Locks Mix), 21 Oct 2020 (Rating: 4)

You'll have to forgive me for not giving it the highest Rating. But while this is an excellent puzzle game, it is too inspired by the mythical Tetris.
Although the addition of monsters and of course color effects gives it a special touch.

All in all, a well deserved tribute to Tetris

La Abadia del Crimen, 27 Oct 2020 (Rating: 5)

At the moment I am not able to finish this game, but what is clear is that apart from its phenomenal multimedia section, it requires a large dose of patience and even strategy. It is not a shmup, you have to think.

Also to say that it shares with the great Great Escape some rare characteristics. These kinds of features really put these kinds of games on a higher level, like from another era and on another machine.
That is why perhaps the best of all that these wonders offer is that they push you to dream, which after all should be the great premise of the noble art of videogames.

Alien 8, 01 Nov 2020 (Rating: 5)

A Superb gem of a game, no doubt.

There is a small technical detail that I would like to share with you.
A technical detail that tells us how good the graphic section is: It turns out that in the remake made with Allegro (2008), our robot, even though it is very well represented, does not fully capture the essence and spirit of the graphic in the original version. That is, with all the limitations of the Spectrum 48K, the graphic of our character is better.
Such is the graphic quality and detail put into each individual character and element. Even the scenery.

Of course, the rest of the characteristics of the game are HiQuality

Viking Raiders, 02 Nov 2020 (Rating: 4)

Good Strategy efforts! Altough with the logical limitations, but you can see the principles and basics of the genre.

Good fun, in-game graphics not marvelous but only functional assets

Norse Sagas also fits well. Pity that it doesn't include clear elements of the Norse mythology {Yes, I was thinking about Age of Mythology!!}

Amaurote, 02 Nov 2020 (Rating: 4)

This is absolutely charming! The arachno-bot or whatever fits so good with those insects. The backgrounds and in general the rest of the graphics...
Everything is more than OK

Comando Quatro, 02 Nov 2020 (Rating: 3)

Basically a good try for explore techniques for swapping player controlled characters
Graphics wise, slightly more than fairly

Livingstone Supongo, 02 Nov 2020 (Rating: 5)

I was wondering whether to give it a 3, a 4, or even a 5.(!)
I think I'll be generous . It's the best game other than Danger Mouse or Sabre Wulf with a Jungle to wander. I have to analyze it with more deep because it's impressive . It is sufficiently varied and imaginative.

You don't just shoot anything, but you have at your disposal a complete adventurer scout kit.

Boomerangs and poles = complex phisycs

No more routine Firing!

Android Two, 03 Nov 2020 (Rating: 4)

Android 2 -or Two- (Archaic ancestor of
TLL and Cyclone) is good to show us the 3D maze concept that they had in the past. Beyond the comparisons and the cruel jokes, it is very successful given the limitation (and how little progress was made at that time in the knowledge of the machine)

With scroll ala Skool Daze.

This game may remind you of Ant attack as well. Another immortal jewel..

Android Nim, 08 Nov 2020 (Rating: 3)

Now, this is in fact funny. An old game, simple and well executed with few available tools

Perfect for a Quick go

And it has the merit of be a type-in BASIC game and a 16 Kb specimen

Ant Attack, 08 Nov 2020 (Rating: 4)

ANT ATTACK also has its own slice of history in the Spectrum's World.
It has true superior elements as the change of perspective. It was so ahead of its time.
I like it because it somehow links with the puzzle/thinking elements I habitually demand on games.

Arkanoid - Revenge of Doh, 30 Nov 2020 (Rating: 3)

Brick games are a safe bet
And that's why I bring these, that were among the most popular.
The second part of
Arkanoid, which I already scored (maximum) back in the day, is interesting but perhaps inferior ..
It's hard to explain, better to try and see, but somehow it lost some charm.

Nonetheless, good enough and, importantly it brings fun

Batty, 30 Nov 2020 (Rating: 3)

This ain't bad at all but ...

As they said it suffers from
good game design. Too simple sprites , this one also has dark and light spots

Krakout, 30 Nov 2020 (Rating: 3)

Playability wise, this is very good.

Of all these 3 ' Arkanoid Impersonators ', this one might as well be the best. But nothing like the mythical and original Arkanoid ;)

Zybex, 20 Dec 2020 (Rating: 4)

I like the playability style of Zybex. Being a more strategy/puzzle oriented gamer I must thank shouldn't hitting Fire like no tomorrow

Boulder Dash, 23 Dec 2020 (Rating: 4)

an excellent arcade with a multitude of conversions, which attests to its success. Original arcade, tons of fun, always different replays with several modes of games.

As they said before me...Great gameplay, very addictive
And still playable!
...an arcade with puzzle features that you always want to play!

4.5/5

Tetris 2, 23 Dec 2020 (Rating: 5)

This second installment of one of the essential games is one of the best of any game. Very well done, perhaps more addicting than the first. Superbly achieved levels.

Time flies while you play;

Wheelie, 27 Dec 2020 (Rating: 4)

For today we are going to see 2 unforgettable games of Microsphere(author, David S. Reidy).
This is very good.

But it is still simple.
Perhaps excessively for some, but I appreciate the simplicity in games.
And this 'one of them
.

At the end of the day, few things are easier (to players' taste) than riding a motorcycle through some corridors, without trying to save the world.
The pity is that it has a bit (quite to be honest) of flickering, I don't know if it will always be like that or because of the emulator, but otherwise it is more than enough to be a more than correct digital entertainment.

...Notwithstanding the above, the most important thing as they already said, preparing the work for the next game, which this one, was a key work for Sinclair softography

Skool Daze, 27 Dec 2020 (Rating: 5)

Skool Daze is a true wonder of digital fun and entertainment.
The first thing I should say is that I am not a #FAN# of video games, they are something that I like and appreciate, but I understand that to be really interesting they must go out of the way and propose new challenges.

This game is one of those that best achieves that goal.
It's funny how David S. Reidy didn't really seem to be a dedicated video game programmer but instead entered that world out of a sense of opportunity. Without a doubt that relative ignorance of the world of videogames helped him create one that went beyond the canons. Add to that Keith Warrington invaluable artistic help and ... the combination of all those factors was great.
With Skool Daze you can relive childhood. (Or you could, I remember it was very popular with Spectrum gamers.)

That aspect of having so much freedom of action that you don't even have to know the objective or the mission is a winning detail.
In fact, so many have played Skool Daze with no clue what to really do, and still love the game.

Probably the least aged game of the entire Spectrum catalog

Head over Heels, 29 Dec 2020 (Rating: 5)

In addition to everything mentioned before me [1], I'd like to comment that in addition to the great technical section this game shines in its puzzles. So I love puzzles and still have them in some way in this great arcade adventure!

.

[1] By the way, very few games have so much consensus about their level

Wiwo Dido: The Case of the Lost Keys, 30 Dec 2020 (Rating: 4)

Regarding this little game, I think that some time ago I had passed by without paying much attention, until the review of p13z made me notice it. I'm still playing it (tasting?) But it's a concept that surprises me that no one else has exploited it before. It's really tempting for those of us who are always looking for something out of the box.

In short, p13z is right, the concept is groundbreaking, the presentation is poor (the gameplay is premium)

MultiDude, 10 Jan 2021 (Rating: 5)

Yes, these are some of the games that people most like when what you are looking for is something simple.

also its appearance is superb. Only complaint, in some emulator color doesn't work properly

Elite, 10 Jan 2021 (Rating: 4)

I remember this one had a very good reputation.
And the massification of its universe, a winning touch

Sun Bucket, 11 Jan 2021 (Rating: 4)

Like MultiDude this is a simple game that does not pretend to make history, but is well designed and polished.
It offers hassle-free fun

As always in these cases, I honestly think the most of the merit must go to the multicolor effects creators (be it Einar Saukas or whoever). This case being one of the most evident.

splATTR, 19 Jan 2021 (Rating: 5)

Finally someone recovers this little wonder from anonymity.
When I first discovered this unique and peculiar game I thought it was a demo and later when I watched it more but not much, I thought that this style and this mechanics fit very well with less powerful computers, and that it would even be ideal for computers even slightly less powerful than the Spectrum

All in all an excellent colored game but in a simple way, making use of user defined graphics ( Chessboard and filled box) and taking advantage of it instead of regretting for not having more graphic and technical power

Fantastic Voyage, 04 Feb 2021 (Rating: 4)

This game captivated me as a child. And I still consider it as something unusual as a voyage... and fantastic (pun intended)

You know, always searching for the uncommon, to be able to travel across human body was satysfizing

Sweevo's World, 04 Feb 2021 (Rating: 5)

In fact, not everything was going to be jumping in the world of video games. Here the three-dimensionality not only works very well but it's fully justified. The resolution of most difficult screens requires movement in a third plane in one way or another.

All in all, a very balanced game and thoughtfully designed so that it is not simply a succession of screens without more depth.
And there is still to comment and analyze evernything about the music, its original way of asking the user to start, or its life / energy system.
All in all, an essential unfairly criticized piece of software as I see it.
Just play it!

Firelord, 10 Feb 2021 (Rating: 5)

Excellent game!
I remember it being a very desired and respected game.
"Being caught stealing", what a crazy feature. The trade/steal system really works and it's original and fun. The map is big and very well done.

I agree that it's a special and innovative game.

Dynamite Dan, 25 Feb 2021 (Rating: 5)

One of the best mad scientists ever represented
Game that is capable of being shown to any child today and fulfilling

When you're bored don't hesitate, play Dynamite Dan
