No love for FBB? The fantastic cartoon graphics certainly help, but I think the coder did a decent job.

It's pretty much a lift of the NES game Punch Out! A popular game on that platform but I've never enjoyed it in any incarnation.

I enjoyed Frank Bruno's Boxing back in the day, but looking at it now it's practically a who's who of racist caricatures. Get past the first few though and they're not just straight knock-offs of the characters from Punch Out, I suppose.
Er... anyway...

1. Bomb Jack is a killer conversion of a killer coin-op. Killer!
2. Frank Bruno, 'arry. If you know what I mean.
3. Wild West Hero, even though I've never heard of it before now, it looks like Robotron and I like Robotron.

It was indeed Punch Out!, but it was the Arcade version of Super Punch Out(which came out in 1984. The NES version came out in 1987.)PeteProdge wrote: ↑Sun Feb 04, 2024 10:45 am It's pretty much a lift of the NES game Punch Out! The arcade game had a cool two monitor setup and you could see through the boxer.
I’m really surprised Elite got away with it, it’s a total rip off down to some of the boxers!
The thing that it missed out on though was the subtleties of working out the moves by the opposing boxer and timing special punches. That gave the arcade game (and the subsequent home console games) a lot more depth. Frank Bruno’s Boxing was quite basic in comparison. However, I loved it at the time. It really felt like the arcade game at home.

Bit of a toughie this as I played Bomb Jack and Frank Bruno Boxing quite a lot back in the days. I think my mate and me probably enjoyed FBB more than Bomb Jack.

I seem to recall a bit of luck being involved with getting past the third boxer, Alexander Punchyeredov. If you jabbed him the animation of his head going back was practically identical to his signature headbutt move - which (I think) always resulted in a knock-down if it connected. It was difficult to tell if you'd caught him with the jab or if he was doing his special move.
IIRC when you completed it there was a banner stating that more fighters would be available later. But that never materialised.
It's a close call between BJ and FBB for me. Played both a hell of a lot.

Bomb Jack has absolutely stormed this. It's the bomb! 18 votes!
A very distant second is Frank Bruno's Boxing, with 3 votes.
Then just trailing that, in third position, Tapper, with 2 votes.
It's a similar story on the proportional results:
Bomb Jack by Elite 39
Frank Bruno's Boxing by Elite 17
Tapper by US Gold 13
Wild West Hero by Timescape Software 8
Grand National by Elite 5
Bomb Jack II by Elite 2

Ah I loved Tapper, despite the ear-bleeding music and occasional graphical problems. Didn't know Paul Holmes was involved.
