Reviews for Formula One (#1844)

This was a bit of a big deal back in the day with the game advertising a steering wheel for the game which would certainly have been one of the first peripheral hardwares released on a home computer or console. Ultimately it appears the game, initially set for release by Spirit, was never released and eventually saw light from Mastertronic as Formula One Simulator, with no obvious mention of the steering wheel because that got canned as well. And after one playthrough of this will show you exactly why this game did not get a release initially, because it's pitiful. The keys positions aren't great but not disastrous and I was able to work around them, but it didn't stop the car's controls being awkward especially with the wonky braking. Also, the game is played in a first-person perspective complete with the hands locked on the steering wheel, and I mean locked because when turning the wheel doesn't even move. What is the point of having a game with a potential steering wheel option is the steering wheel itself doesn't move. Also the steering wheel is listed in the options but it only seems to move right on the cursor keys. But this is astonishingly bad. Take a look at Chequered Flag one year earlier and you will see my point completely.
