Reviews for Golden Axe (#2081)

Review by Raphie on 09 Feb 2012 (Rating: 4)

One of the best known arcade games and one of most favourite Mega Drive games gets the Spectrum facelift. It contains one of my absolute favourite tunes ever (a rendition of Wilderness) and while the gameplay is obviously inferior to it's arcade and 16-bit counterparts it's still good enough to provide the joys of the game. It's not the greatest but it does it's job.

While it was never going to surpass its original version the Spectrum version still holds its own to be quite a decent playable port as well as containing a wonderful title tune. Not a brilliant game but more than passable.

Well it's fast and colourful but it's not very good is it?
It's a decent conversion of a hugely over-rated game.
Is it just me or is the collision detection a bit off?

I don´t know why I hadn´t reviewed this game before but this conversion of the SEGA arcade classic is remarkably well done .

Not as spectacular as the original but colorful and utterly playable , nontheless ! ! !

Good job ! !

3,5 / 5 .

I'm confused about this game. It's as good a conversion as you would expect, but the original game wasn't all that special, outside of the arcade. It's colorful and fast, but absolutely unremarkable.

A tedious bland arcade game gets a tedious bland conversion. Nothing too exciting here. And why is Axe Battler wearing no pants?

A very nice conversion, not as good as the original but very competent. Colors were maintained which is not easy to do with a Spectrum, but the authors managed it very well. The tunes are awesome, I really like them. And the playability keeps the addictive effect the original has. There are some minor quibbles I have but nothing too special, mainly the boring backgrounds, which could have been done with more care and imagination and the colission detection, which is not good. All in all a very good conversion of arcade coin-op.
