Reviews for Nuclear City Bomber (#21511)

This game belongs in a crap game compo , but as it was apparently released in 1984 it's well ahead of its time! After fourteen years of crap game competitions at the time of writing, we feel we know this sort of game all too well.

Featuring a single gag, this game is at least a smidgen enjoyable as deploying nuclear weapons is just as much fun here as it is in "Civ 2" for example. However, the game really can only score one as it's not really a game but a joke. Great for its time, but twenty-five years later simply a middling crap game effort.

The game is made even worse by comfortably fitting into a 16K speccy, yet uses hard-coded UDG addresses. So, it must in fact be played on a 48K system to see the graphics as intended. I have to ask, what is wrong with using the ' USR "a" ' method to set up UDGs? Surely remembering the address is more difficult and it breaks compatibility!

Play it once if you must and then you'll never need to again. Although if nothing else, it could be used as a "stressbuster".

1984 Scorpion Software (UK)
by Stuart Campbell

A Blitz clone game.
Press B to bomb and blast away 34 cities (33 because the game has a little bug, a missing comma between Stockholm and Manchester).
Whether you bomb the cities or just crash into them, the message will be the same "the city has been annihilated".
This was certainly intended as a joke and while reviewing it I really felt pranked!

I loaded this up with low expectations, fully appreciating that it was going to be a single-key 'bomb the city' game. Still it managed to disappoint.
If this sounds at all appealing, then try playing something like ground force zero, don't try this 'game'.
I can only imagine this was intended as some kind of 'imagine Blitz with nuclear bombs' type of joke. Which, face it, just isn't funny.

This was the only game among the top worst games on the stats page I had not reviewed yet so I thought I'd give it a shot and see for myself why it's so crap, now I know. Basically you can't lose, either drop one bomb or crash into a building and the city is annihilated and you win, pretty certain that isn't how Blitz works. Plus, I got to Tokyo and said to myself that there's a pun with this but I'm not going to use it, very next screen reads Hiroshima (deja vu), thanks for that Mr. Campbell I just said I wasn't going to do the pun and you've done it for me! And then when you've finished all the levels you get an out of data error message, these endings in Spectrum games usually weren't red hot but this takes the biscuit completely! This isn't even a game, it's just tongue and cheek and a bit silly.
