Reviews for Hungry Horace (#2390)

Review by Matt_B on 23 Jan 2009 (Rating: 3)

One of the very first games to be released for the, then new, ZX Spectrum in 1982, this established the legendary character of Horace; a blue blob with short arms, long legs and enormous eyes.

It's basically a Pac Man clone, although the maze is roughly themed after a park, instead of ghosts there is a purple faced guard, who will be joined with reinforcements if you linger too long. You don't need to collect all the dots to go to the next level, but there's a bell you can ring to frighten the guards that serves as a power pill.

Despite a good splash of colour, the game is marred somewhat by jerky movement; everything sticks to exact character squares. There's also some rather poor maze design on the latter levels where you'll need some luck as well as skill to get past the guards.

It might not have been a brilliant piece of programming that stretched the Spectrum to its limits, or a particularly original or well designed game, but it gave us something to play and talk about whilst the Spectrum games industry started to get into gear.

Pioneer game starring the legendary character of Horace who seems to have an insatiable belly.

A charming-little piece of PSION early software !! ;D

1982 Sinclair Research (UK)
by William Tang

Basically a Pac-Man clone but with a different edge. It gained a lot by being one of the earlier games released to the Spectrum. Had it been released a bit later probably Horace never would enter the Speccy wall of fame. The game is a bit rough, the colours are not well chosen(although I like them) and clash a little and its not that difficult to play, but it was lots of fun playing it and in 1982 it was a marvellous experience to us kids. So it deserves its name in the game history.

Horace does Pac-Man somewhat and it's a bit of a mixed bag. It doesn't play particularly bad but then again it doesn't play that great either. The teleport areas seemed to work best for the enemies more than Horace which annoyed me greatly, what's the point of having them if they're going to be more of a detriment? I'm beginning to see why everyone speaks of Horace Goes Skiing and not the others.

This is the first game in the Horace series, one of the most iconic Spectrum characters.

Coded in 1982 by William Tang, is a decent pac-man clone in 16k that consists of four screens with guards as enemies. Simple and with a fine level of difficulty, good for a quick gaming.

One of the few games that were released both in cassette and Interface II cartdridge.
