Reviews for L.s.d. (#2942)

Review by The Dean of Games on 02 Mar 2010 (Rating: 3)

From the authors of Formula One!

A Gambling game. This was their first released game back in 1984, and it showed their potencial.
Written in BASIC it comprised horse racing, stock exchange, dog racing, property, commodities market and mini roullette all-in-one and with personalized screen for each game. The horse and dog racing were quite good routines, having even a turn-left in the dog race.

Worth checking.

The real name is spelt £.s.d. and not 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' :p

I loaded this one up because I thought it might be some fractal demo or something, but it turns out it is not actually called 'L.S.D.' but '£.S.D.'.
The £ doesn't work with databases or something so they substituted a an L.

Anyway, this is a gambling game.
You buy shares and property and invest in futures.
You also play roulette and bet on horses and dogs, although it appears that these are fixed because I never managed to win :0)

Occasionally, fate will intervene and you will either gain or lose (usually lose) some money.

I set the bar low and decided upon a target of £20,000 in liquid cash.

Each day, you get £1,000 to invest/gamble.

This means that if I had simply done nothing, I would have reached my target in 20 days, but unfortunately it actually took me 34 days to reach my goal.

I liked the fact that 'jail' is spelt 'gaol' which is nice and old fashioned.

Otherwise this is a pretty dull game, and the sound effects (annoying beeps) are distracting.
My wife was trying to watch TV while I was playing, and the sounds were annoying her, so at least I got a little entertainment value.

Probably not worth bothering with.

THE DRUGS MAN! THE DRUGS! Actually this has nothing to do with that thankfully as it's actually named £.S.D., so but a name of such doesn't agree with databases I'm gonna call this Pound SD. It's an interesting one to say the least with six different ways to make or lose money. However, it ultimately doesn't have a lasting appeal, once I did all six I felt there was nothing left to do, there is a targer goal to reach but this simply doesn't offer enough to stick around to achieve it. Yes it has six different types of game but only two are remotely interesting, horse racing and dog racing, everything else was a bit naff.
