Reviews for Pulsoids (#3936)

Nice Breakout clone, rather generous with extra balls and extra lives but still it's very playable and plays at a good speed as well as containing nice music. Definately worth a shot playing.

The front cover of the inlay is very misleading and makes you think it's an alien shooter, but it's just a mere Breakout clone instead. And I have to say it's a pretty nice one. It certainly looks and plays a lot better than Arkanoid 2 did and that was four times the price of this. It plays at a good speed though it probably gets too fast at times and too frantic with multiple balls on the screen at once. There's also good music as well from Sound Images though I'm unsure if it was Tiny Williams or Paul Tonge, could well have been the latter. Definitely one of the better Breakout games on the Spectrum.

The game is quite fun and fast, but it completely missed one of the key Arcanoid features — ball control.

In Arcanoid, you can use your paddle to deflect the ball at a different angle. With some practice, you will be able to make more-or-less "directed ball shots". But in Pulsoids, the pulse is always deflected at 90 degrees, there is no way to contol this. So, for me, the game feels… flat.

I'd like to rate it as bad, but everything else is ok, so it is 2.5, which rounds to average.
