Reviews for Race Fun (#3991)

Top-down scrolling rally-style game but poor design decisions make it an annoyance to play.

Your controls are left, right, accelerate and brake and you're driving a race car up a track that moves left and right as well as changing width.

The basic driving mechanics are similar to "Spy Hunter" but there the similarity ends. It wouldn't be so bad except for not being to accelerate and steer at the same time! This becomes especially apparent when the track narrows to only allow two cars through and the other car is veering all over the place.

Your fuel gauge is the time limit here but it's debateable whether you'd actually play it long enough for it to run down. While it has promise, it's frustrating and repetitive and not really worth playing other than to imagine what it could have been like with an extra bit of work on the game design.

An early racing game which was not very good in its own times; now it's downright awful.

Main features are poor graphics, dubious collision management and monotonous gameplay. To be avoided at all costs.

I remember playing this game a lot as a boy.
Was it the sound of the motor raging with power that fueled my fire ?
Well, back in those days, people were used to playing games in order to beat scores. Games with levels were scarse and Pinball machines ruled.
Race Fun was no exception to the rule.
Your only goal here is to beat your own score. And it could be fun if you played with a friend or had nothing better to play or do with yourself.
The game is still playable if you have no problems with the tricky controls. Also the idea behind score breaking is still compeling this days so this may appeal to you. And you cant deny the speed of the game isnt attractive. Unfortunately there are better games out there and Race Fun is only a good memory I like to revisit now and then.

Test your driving ability in this hectic race. Avoid hitting other cars, this looses valuable fuel. You must travel at speed to gain any points!

Right well that's the in-game instructions dealt with then so now you'll know what type of game we are dealing with here, just drive up the road and avoid everything in sight. So how does it fare then? Well there's one thing this ain't....fun.

The game says to avoid other cars, the controls do not help with this whatsoever. Now I've never driven a car in my life so I'm no except but I'm pretty certain you can accelerate or brake and be able to steer...this game DOESN'T allow that. To steer you must stop accelerating, which makes it very difficult to avoid cars as they are somewhat attached to you and if you can't accelerate to zoom past them they will most likely just stick with you no matter what, thus losing fuel.

It's similar to another of John Cain's games Fantasia where you couldn't move and shoot at the same time, to shoot you had to stop moving, in this case you cannot press slow down and right at the same time, it only allows one button to be pressed at a time, rendering this completely useless. Even some of the basic driving games don't have this issue!

Simply put Race Fun isn't fun at all and is just a load of tosh.

Not a resounding driving game. Controls are too awkward and the other cars are too unbalanced. Not fun at all.
