Reviews for Renegade III (#4090)

The final insult would probably have been a better name for this last gasp attempt at milking some more cash from a franchise that had been fairly successful up to this point. Where previous Renegade games had essentially been street fighting affairs, this bungs you into a prehistoric pastiche in which your enemies are cartoon cavemen and dinosaurs.

The graphics are fairly detailed, but a bit of a mishmash and completely monochrome which gives a rather messy look to proceedings. The gameplay is a decided step back from the previous games as there's no longer the ability to pick up weapons or play side by side.

Basically, it's thrown away most of what was good about the previous two games and replaced it with a bunch of things that blatantly don't work. One to avoid, especially so if you enjoyed the earlier games.

The game's tagline was The Final Chapter....and it was exactly that! Absolutely dreadful and an insult to the Renegade series.

They changed too much of the game, the moves were rubbish, the levels were ridiculous, I mean why are we fighting Captain Caveman exactly?

I mean the music from Jonathan Dunn is superb but its hardly a redeeming feature for such an appalling game.

Just an awful, awful game. Stick to the first two games and avoid this turkey of a game.

You cant blame the authors for trying a different thing in this third 'Renegade' incarnation. But frankly, what does this have to do with the original? If you exclude the main character you feel like you are playing anything but a 'Renegade' sequel.
The game is not that bad, the gameplay, graphics and sound are fairly average and for that alone I would rate it with a 3, but since this belongs to the 'Renegade' family and it looks more like a renegaded bastard son, I will lower my rating.
If this game had another name it probably wouldn't be so hated.

They really went backwards with this title. They took away much of the good stuff from the previous titles and replaced them with rubbish moves and a ridiculous plot. What the hell went wrong?

How do you follow up Target Renegade? With dinosaurs of course! I don't even know why you're fighting dinosaurs. It's such a stupid idea I'm not going to read the instructions to find out.

Renegade III is the remain of what they were two great games. Only decent graphics and movement of the character. But overall is a surrealist and boring product, an example of abuse of using sequels.

This beat'em up was undermined by the disappointment effect given by the quality of its predecessors,
but, sorry, I don't think it's totally bad. I almost enjoy it (for a couple of minutes) and I spent money for it at the time.

Well at least it's competently programmed - there are no bugs to speak of and controls work as expected. However, that's basically everything good that can be said of this game. The attempt to turn the gritty atmosphere of Renegade and Target Renegade into a time-crossing comedy fails miserably. If it hadn't the word Renegade in the title it would have been a passable, if derivative, beat-em-up. But the fact that it is supposed to be the final chapter of the gang warfare saga makes it all the more disappointing. It's better to make Renegade III fade into history.
