Reviews for Rocky (#4198)

Arriving at about the same time as Frank Bruno's Boxing from Elite and Knockout from Alligata, this was one of the first boxing games to hit the Spectrum in the wake of the arcade success of Punch Out.

It's got some quite pretty graphics for its age, and was easily the looker of the three games with some nice animation, albeit almost entirely in monochrome.

However, the gameplay leaves a lot to be desired. Whilst most Dinamic games have reputations for being extremely difficult, this is one of the exceptions. After a few minutes play you're pretty much bound to figure out a trick that'll see you win every fight, and it just becomes a procession.

It's not too bad for five minutes of fun, but I'd recommend going for Frank Bruno, or the later Barry McGuigan World Championship Boxing instead, if you want something with a bit more punch.

A pretty decent boxing simulator with huge graphics and correct movements .

The loading screen says it all ...

A less than mediocre boxing simulation where you have to fight four boxers who all look the same and fight the same (despite having different portraits and weights shown in the lower left corner). You only have a left and right punch and a left and right defense. Graphics are unremarkable, sound is limited to a couple of sound effects, and all you have to do is to push the left and right blow alternatively until your opponent's energy goes down.

The only good feature of Rocky (renamed Rocco by Gremlin Graphics for copyright reasons) is the cover illustration by comics master Alfonso Azpiri. All the rest can be completely and safely avoided.

Another bringer of good memories. Played it a lot with my friends.
The graphics are quite nice, big and nicely detailed, and probably the best feature of the game, but the game falls short on playability, becoming repetitive after a while, I wonder how I managed to find it interesting back in the days..

I finished it at my first attempt, and it was really boring.

One of the first boxing games for the Spectrum, similar to the classic arcade Punch-Out by Nintendo. Good graphics but it should have had a better gameplay. I remember being addictive to it when I got it. Great cover art by Alfonso Azpiri.

Initially released by Dinamic as Rocky, it was re-released by Gremlin as Rocco, which is funny for me because my son is called Rocco who a few years ago was the near spitting image of the main character in Wonder Boy. This is another Punch-Out style game much like Frank Bruno's Boxing, but while it is relatively simpier it lacks the graphical charm. Much like Punch-Out there are different characters to face against, each with different looks and characteristics, and while Frank Bruno's Boxing managed to achieved the look of each character, this does not as everyone looks the same regardless. It is also less varied and more so, less fun and quickly gets old and repetitive. I did enjoy the simplicity of the gameplay but for everything else Bruno gets the nod. I'll just go ahead and stick to playing Barry McGuigan instead.
