Reviews for Rod-Land (#4222)

Review by The Dean of Games on 02 Aug 2012 (Rating: 5)

1991 Storm Software (UK)
by Jason McGann and Shaun McClure

Rod-land is a beautifully designed game with incredible gameplay and very very addictive and the conversion is absolutely brilliant.
I personally prefer games written before 1987, mainly because those were the golden years of the Spectrum and my best playing years.
But its impossible not to be touched by gems such as this one.
Everything here is wonderful, from the main tune to the most discret platform brick. The only complaint I have is with the limited use of colour and the poor level variety. But those are minor complaints compared to the quality of everything else. Glad to have Rod-Land has my 500 review.

A decent port but why is it in monochrome? The lack of colour is particularly noticeable as this came a year after Rainbow Islands showed just how good an arcade conversion could be in the right hands.

This is quite a popular game and I can safely see why. I love the opening graphics, absolutely bloody gorgeous, and yet the in-game cutscenes and graphics are in monochrome, I'm guessing they used up all the graphic points in the intro. The gameplay is simple and works very well, very arcade friendly and simple enough to be ported accurately. It's no Rainbow Islands and it's no Pang, but it's still a very worthy arcade conversion to look at.

A great conversion of the cutesy coin-op platformer, from the twilight commercial years of the Spectrum.
The original has been recreated well for the old Speccy. Graphics are smooth, and control is quick and responsive.
Just good lighthearted fun to play, especially with two players.
Only criticism is that a bit of colour wouldn't have gone amiss, especially given the cartoon eye-candy of the original. But with gameplay like this such details can be forgiven.
