Reviews for Rogue Trooper (#4225)

Drawn by a toddler with garish felt tips this game gives our hero Rougue the walking gait that Dale Winton might adopt in a combat situation.
The game flick screens through an approximation of isometric perspective. It wraps round to disguise a small map.Killing a bad guy is more a question of careful allignment rather than quick reactions.
The game is also very easy to complete.
For all of that I got a bit out of it, it created a good atmosphere.
I persevered for the 30 minutes or so it took to complete it. Having done so I can't imagine any future scenario where I'd get any replay value out of it.

A noteworthy rendition of the great 2000 AD comic series - which is sadly completely lacking an Italian release even at the time of writing (November 2011). Good, clear graphics and nice touches such as the quotes from your fallen comrades as long as you proceed in the game are especially interesting.

If you go around killing Northern soldiers mindlessly, your adventure will soon come to an end - apart from when you are in Nu-Ruthin, your energy falls constantly, your ammo is limited and you should therefore use medikits and ammo packs only when you really need them.

That said, the game is not very hard and once you learn how to manage your supplies efficiently you will be able to complete your mission without much effort. This is undoubtedly the biggest drawback of the game.

Based on a sci fi comic book I know nothing about, Rogue Trooper was criticized for being too easy. Personally I don't care much about it, because I find it's a pleasant kind of easyness. You must find 8 tapes littered around the playing area and then get into a shuttle, or something like that. You can see the area in your immediate vicinity thanks to a map on the higher left of the screen, while you walk in a 3d isometric space, but one different from the usual Knightloresque type, it's a flip screen thing with a certain continuity, although with no scrolling, where you can be followed by the enemies and the locations don't seem isolated among them. The graphics style is completely different too, and it's pretty cool, with nice design and animation. You have the company of your old buddies, shouting nonsense at the top of the screen [you're carrying their "bio-chipped personalities" with you, I'm told], and you will ecounter shooting blokes that seem to have come out of Star Wars, radioactive areas, ammos, useless plucked chickens left on the ground [..., medical kits and whatever. It's extremely playable, and hence, as stated, very easy, but pretty good nonetheless, so...
3,75/5

It features one of the worst loading screens of the year, if not of all time.

It was fun walking around shooting the baddies, until I figured that the best way to do it was by shooting them close which takes up energy, and also that, well that was it, that's the game. Of course your picking up items along the way but it didn't add anything for me, it got to the point where I couldn't wait for the game to end, and thankfully it did not long after.

Great looking game, with nice animated characters and easy movement, but the game quest is a bit too simple. Also, if anyone told me this game was called something else, I never would associate it with 2000AD Rogue Trooper.
