Reviews for Super Soccer (#5039)

What a wonderful game this one is in my opinion.

I am a big fan of the Imagine´s World Series saga and this Super Soccer is no exception.

From all the soccer simulators out there for the Spectrum this Super Soccer is the one which satisfies me the most.

How anyone could find this pile of code waste entertaining is beyond me. There are much better soccer games on the Spectrum than this - even the old Match Day, as dated as it is, is tons better. Super Soccer is slow, jerky, graphically confusing and bugged, and ends up being downright irritating.

Ahah, 'Super Soccer' was just a great piece of crap of a game, but I have very fond memories of it. I loved the players graphics and that's the main reason I was so patient with it.
And it takes lots of patience, believe me!
The playability is simple awful, very slow and messy.
If you want to play a soccer game, choose almost anything else.

An absolute disaster of a football game. Movement of the players take forever and trying to kick the ball never mind score a goal is down to luck. It's far too slow, sluggish and confusing. This was a lot of money wasted.

This game's so bad it's almost comical. The players move so slowly it's like they're running through treacle. Even if your player does manage to reach the ball there's no guarantee he'll connect with it. Absolutely abysmal.

MY GOD! Here's a soccer game I completely forgot about! And how could I have forgotten it? For it's unbelievably one of the most attrocious games of any genre let alone soccer!

The player movement is so slow, you can't move them the other direction until they "slow down", kicking the ball is a matter of luck, when anyone scores it takes them around a full minute to return to their positions, gosh it's just the absolute pits. If it's a bad soccer game you want this is truly it...for me personally a forgotten gem!

Why is it that most games with "super" turn out sh...now now clean your reviews clean young man...but yes you get my point don't you?

Although under certain aspect it's a terrible soccer game, it's surely not as bad as I remembered, and it must be recognized that for the time it was pretty advanced and could pride features that even the illustrious Match Day series didn't have. You can do a lot of foul play and, consequently, there are free kicks and penalties too. The ball doesn't glue to your feet, but you must costantly hit it again at each pace of your run, just like in Kick Off, and in reality too. That said, the game tends to be exasperating, in its slowness and controlling difficulty, it's very hard to keep the ball and run with it, or even passing it, let alone building a coherent team action. There's a merciless acceleration routine that tendentially shifts your players into turtles and snails when you make them change direction. So, it's a bit for sadomasochistic Spectrum soccer games fans. But you can squeeze some enjoyment out of it, if you're ready to sweat as much as in a real game.
3/5

A very dissapointing football game by Imagine.

After the classic Match Day, its very sequel, Match Day II, Emilio Butragueño Fútbol or Emlyn Huges demonstrated that the game by Jon Ritman & Chris Clarke could be improved.

But Super Soccer, except for a superb artwork by Bob Wakelin, is a step back. Slow and unpayable. It features a slightly different version of the original Match Day tune, which seems a bad joke, as well as including the infamous word 'soccer'.

A pathetic excuse for a soccer game that almost feels like it’s been written for a joke. Among the most dire piece of gameplay you will find in any sport simulation game. And this got good reviews from SU and YS, which is just baffling. And it’s easy to say “well it just doesn’t play that well nowadays”, but this didn’t play well, at all. In the same year International Match Day was released, which granted was the same as Match Day, but it plays so much better than whatever this was meant to be.

NOTE
In response to Juan F. Ramirez’s review regarding the tune, both this and Match Day, and International Match Day as well for that matter (and I’m sure there are others) use the theme song for Match of the Day, a BBC football highlights programme which still runs to this day. So it’s not like this game was trying to take the piss with that but from the state of the gameplay I can see why you suspected it. This game has a second theme tune as well which is, well a lot worse.
