Reviews for Super Wonder Boy (#5053)

A decent version of the Sega classic. Some of the colour schemes are horrific though, particularly the yellow and red on level two. And why is it if I'm using a joystick I still have to use the keyboard to buy items from shops?

The sequel to Wonder Boy and this always was the better game for me on all formats, the Spectrum version though lacks the fine features that makes the other versions stand out. First off, minor complaint of no music, Super Wonder Boy has some great music and it’s a pity it can’t be heard here. The second and a major complaint, monochrome graphics, not so much the first level but the yellow and red in level 2 Cruel refers to in his review, hate to say it mate but you were right, it really hurt my eyes. It plays grand and all and like I said it is the better of the games compared to Wonder Boy, but misses the mark of greatness. It’s alright but it’s also a classic case of what might have been.

It moves smoothly, although a bit slowly. And it's boring.
And the choice of colours offends my pupils. I think I hate it.

The sequel to Wonder Boy, some say it's better, other don't, it's a bit debatable.
I don't particularly fancy any of the 2 games, they are nice enough, fairly addictive, but miss the mark of greatness by some distance. Maybe the monochrome schemes devalue the game, or the lack of music in the older models or maybe the comparison with the original arcade version is what makes the most damage. Somehow I can't get past the feeling that this is a "meh" game.
