Reviews for Sweevo's World (#5087)

Review by Matt_B on 14 Feb 2009 (Rating: 4)

In something of a departure from their, at the time, graphical adventure fare Gargoyle branched out with this light hearted Knight Lore influenced arcade-adventure.

Perhaps unfortunately, everyone else had similar ideas of following Ultimate's lead and there were a whole slew of other isometric games coming out at the same time. It also lacks the elements of jumping and pushing objects around which makes it seem rather limited at first glance. However, it does have some great graphics, some innovative puzzles and a neat sense of humour making it hard not to like.

Not the most original effort from Gargoyle, but still a very enjoyable game. It spawned an expanded 128K version entitled Sweevo's Whirled and a full sequel in the shape of Hydrofool.

Sweevo's World is an isometric puzzle/action/adventure style game. It came out at approximately the same time a flood of isometric titles were appearing, following on from Ultimate's lead with Knight Lore.

However, unlike Knight Lore, there's actually a game in Sweevo's World, and a fun one at that (perhaps that's being slightly unfair to Knight Lore, but on reflection it seems more of a technology demonstrator with a game bolted on, rather than a game first and foremost). The mechanics of Sweevo's World are straightforward - it doesn't have so much of the pushing things around aspect of many of the isometric games, but this doesn't matter - it has good game play. Added to this game play is a good sense of humour from the developers, and quite rightly this game is a classic - a very playable isometric game that leaves you wanting more after each game.

After all, who doesn't want to drop a comedy 1 ton weight on their enemies!

Bloody Knight Lore's got a lot to answer for! All these isometric 3D games are all the same aren't they?
I'm not sure what I was expecting from this one. I expected more than this though. Yawn.

One of the greatest when it comes to the use of humour. And full of charm.
You just don't jump! Make your way through across a great map using some other arguments!

In fact, not everything was going to be jumping in the world of video games. Here the three-dimensionality not only works very well but it's fully justified. The resolution of most difficult screens requires movement in a third plane in one way or another.

All in all, a very balanced game and thoughtfully designed so that it is not simply a succession of screens without more depth.
And there is still to comment and analyze evernything about the music, its original way of asking the user to start, or its life / energy system.
All in all, an essential unfairly criticized piece of software as I see it.
Just play it!
