Reviews for Thunderhawk (#5265)

Review by interghost on 11 Apr 2013 (Rating: 2)

For an early Speccy game, from 1984, this title isn't too bad. It feels a bit like a Space Invaders title. However, the skill level required is slightly higher as the Aliens (or ThunderHawks) swoop down at you as they attack.
The game only has three real levels, then it repeats on it's self, but the third level has a great surprise in the form of a Boss Level. Shoot away the underside of the Mother-Ship and then destroy the Alien Leader within!
Good couple of minutes of fun to be had, but that said there are plenty of games on the Speccy far better than this one.

Poor implementation of an old idea ...

1,5 out of 5 .

It's a Galaxian clone, or that's what WoS says, the enemies fly very smoothly, they're nicely superfast when they dive, and even your spacecraft doesn't move badly, it looks like a beetle, but walks like a crab [it really looks like it's walking]. It has top notch flickering and it's even playable, and after three of four waves of thunderhawks you get to a colorful mothership. I was tempted to give 3/5 to it, but it's a bit too easy - it's almost hard to die, at times. [by the way, not bad the explosion, if you manage to die]. It looks like you're always able to dodge the enemies' bombs for a pixel or two. It's not that bad, in spite of the 4.16 score on WoS, from 8 users.

Its part Galaxians clone, part Phoenix, and not half as good as Galaxians (Artic) or Pheenix (Megadodo). Thought it might be for the 16K Spectrum (as Pheenix was), but seemingly not. Not the worst of this type of game, but only because it is a genre with some absolute stinkers in it. The coder is clearly competent (went on to write Mailstsrom for Ocean)
Verdict: a bit of a lazy effort

This is a poor but playable Phoenix clone, although our ship resembles the ship from Galaxian, but everything else is inspired on Phoenix.
The graphics are bigger are more detailed but nothing outstanding. The playability suffers from bad key response and slowness when the screen is too busy with alien ships.
I've managed to reach level 2, and enjoyed seeing the mother ship, which is very similar to the most famous Spectrum version, the popular Pheenix. It's not the same, nor prettier or playable, but its similar and functional, and if you are tired of playing the same old Phoenix games and never tried this one before, give it a shot, it's harder, so may come as a challenge.
Had this been released in 1983 and I would give it a 3.
