Reviews for Turrican (#5472)

multicoloured, multilevel, multiscrolling. the main feature of turrican is simply its plurality of qualities, from the vastity and variety of the landscape, with its galleries, platforms that reach to the sky, waterfalls, abysses and whatever, to the surprising playability, determined by the responsive main character - very easy to move nimly and fastly through the locations, almost as in the first bomb jack - , his big leaps, and the spheres that give you more powerful weapons and temporary invincibility.
the area to explore is wide, differentiated, and beautiful to watch.

one of the best games of the last commercial years.

Shoot at everything that gets in your path no matter what it is and no matter how it looks like ... this seems to be the premise of Turrican !

If you like this sort of games you might like Turrican , but it is not my cup of tea , really .

2,5 out of 5 .

1990 Rainbow Arts (UK)

Somehow I always felt that this game was written in Basic and then speeded up in code. Well, it ain't Basic and you can surely play it, alright. But frankly, there are literally dozens of other games I would prefer. Movement is too jerky and crude to my likings.

I admit it's addictive and enjoyable enough, just not for me. I was hoping that by 1990, the programming techniques would be better. It's impossible not to compare this with Exolon, for instance, and not raise an eyebrow with discontent.

Forget the dreadful sequel, the first Turrican game was ported brilliantly to the Spectrum. It's fast and colourful with huge levels to explore and lots of things to shoot at. Recommended.

I was very disappointed with Turrican when I bought it back in 1992 in raining Torquay, probably because I expected so much from it, or too much I guess. In truth it's not a bad game, the graphics are superb, but the gameplay I found a letdown even still now. It just feels like it's missing something, it doesn't feel quite right. It's not a bad game, I'm just convinced better versions exist. At least I bought the budget release rather than full price.
