Reviews for Uridium (#5525)

Review by p13z on 08 Jun 2013 (Rating: 5)

Uridium is an excellent sideways scrolling, top down space shooter. Left and right movement accelerates your ship, allowing you to change direction and take evasive action. The game and controls take a short while to get used to. It can be infuriatingly difficult to start with, but it is well worth persevering.
The game and graphics are smooth and fluid, nicely animated, but mostly monochrome. This game was one of my favourites at the time, and still gets a play, even today.

This game is considered a classic by many but I see two elements of harsh reality with it. The first is the Commodore 64 version is better, which hurts me to say that but it's the truth, and the second is Zynaps, also by Dominic Robinson, is much better as well.

Superb action shooter in which manoueverability is all. Uridium shares surprisingly little in common with other horizontal shmups in that you need to turn back on yourself whilst avoiding buildings and the enemy. The quick-slow pace -with inertia - is challenging, successfully defeating a level is very satisfying.

The game plays well to the Spectrum's clean and well defined mono graphics. The shading creates atmosphere and is especislly impressive.

Well, I must say that especially after playing lots of mediocre or straight crappy games, the technical prowess
and the sheer professionalism of Uridium is astounding, both playability and graphics being absolutely
smooth, slick, fast and enjoyable. The monochrome sci fi approach is very atmospheric and definitely superior
to the anti-climatic bland and ill-conceived colour combinations of the original C64 version. Tune and sound effects
are cute, and the loading screen is an aesthetic delight.
