Reviews for Bump, Set, Spike! (#762)

A rather mediocre attempt at simulating a beach-volley match over the spectrum .

The aim is attractive but the program is poorly executed . :(

This time you control two players instead of one , you can combine and make passes but is rather difficult .

Although colorless , the graphics are ok ... the main problem is that there is no excitement in playing this mainly because the programmers have ignored every aspect that make volleyball exciting : big jumps , smashes , speed ... the movements are excruciatingly slow .

Good try ... but Bump, Set, Spike!! leaves a lot to be desired .

2,5 for me .

Rubbish volleyball game, crude and shoddy gameplay makes this unappelling for new and avid fans.

A rare volleyball game, a sport not much practiced on Spectrum's screens, and not a very good one.
The teams are made of two players each, which is more like beach volley, and controlling them is
too arduous to really be fun. You have the usual directional keys and fire, plus two other keys to select
the player you want to move - and they don't even respond very readily. To hit the ball while you are receiving, you must place yourself in the right spot, where a sort of crosshair signals the ball destination, keep fire pressed and move the crosshair where you want to send it. It's a chore. I got bored before really being able to do something.

I owned this game in '86, but I put it aside very quickly the reason being it's completely unplayable. It borders utter rubbish. It's not because of it's simple looking graphics, neither the small playing area. It's just because it's unplayable! You may practice it so much and never became good at it. The way the game is written and designed makes it a pain to play, besides all the 5 common keys (movement and fire) you have 2 other keys you use to select the player you want, that by itself makes any game harder, but when properly written it's just a matter of practice, but that not the case with B,S,S!. Because besides the keys being unresponsive sometimes, there is limited movement to pass the ball or simple shoot, namely no diagonal positioning, this not only makes the game limited but also hard to play and score. Dreadful.
