Reviews for California Games (#790)

Dire conversion of the C64 unusual multi-event sports title. While the original game in itself is a mixed bag, with some interesting and original twists (Foot Bag, Surfing) coupled with more ordinary stuff (BMX, Roller skates), the Spectrum version is a real disaster. Shoddy graphics, almost no sound and sluggish gameplay make it a weak and pale imitation of the original.

I used to absolutely love this game as a kid.....and I really look back and ask myself why? WHY? This is rubbish!!

The events are tedious, the graphics are awful, there's very little sound and there's hardly any enjoyment from this at all! When it comes to rubbish ports on the Speccy few come worse than California Games.

If it's paradise you're looking for....stick with Cambridge rather than California because you'll get none from this game.

Not remotely terrible but certainly lacks thrills and won't have you excited for too long.

After discovering that this game belongs to the same series as Winter Games, which is one of my favorite sports games, I was really surprised and eventually letdown. Where are the beautiful graphics? What happened to the sound? And what kind of "games" are these? Are they really played in real life? If so, are these people sane? Obviously I'm joking. The Spectrum version is by far inferior to what it should be, and in some machines this game is quite cool.

California Games is by right a great, fun game, but that largely depends on the version you’re playing and this is not that version. It’s very dumbed down with pitiful graphics, complex gameplay, minute sound and no replay value. Epyx weren’t dying yet and this is among their quality games, but this port does it no justice.
