Reviews for Ghosts 'n Goblins (#9351)

This video-game was quite original back in its day and very , very popular . ;D

The Spectrum conversion seems pretty decent .

The path is fast so you need to think rapidly to avoid death .

The final screen always put a smile in my face . :)

There aren´t many better games for any platform .

1986 Elite soft (UK)
by Keith Burkhill and Nigel Alderton

G.'n G. is one of the most furious side scrolling action games I've come across.
Faster than this I can only think of Green Beret. I remember the huge sensation it was when it came out. Everybody wanted a copy. And being me one of the first kids in my block to own a copy I had to share it with everyone else, so it got worn out quickly (I still have that copy!).
This is indeed fun all around. It moves fast and it looks crazy. How awesome was it in 1986 to play against zombies and goblins?
It's true, the Spectrum version is way inferior to the arcade game, but it still packs a punch.
A classic.

Do graphics matter? In most cases the answer is no, as long as the game is fun. But when the graphics interfere with the gameplay that's another matter. This is one of those games. The backgrounds blend in with the foreground sprites which makes it hard to spot some of the enemies and thus ruins what could've been an enjoyable game.
Perhaps if I could see what was going on I might enjoy this more.

Another entertaining coin op conversion from Elite.

Another of those arcade games I never liked and predictably I didn't find much love for the Speccy version either. Elite had some of the best ports on the Speccy and this certainly looks to be on par with the rest of them, but it's just too tough to get into. I never got very far in this even with nine lives.

A good conversion of the Capcom classic arcade by Keith Burkhill and Nigel Alderton for Elite.

An heroic knight to the rescue of a beautiful maiden from the claws of the evil Overlord.

As in other Elite conversions (i.e. Commando) graphics are not the best point, but they're made up for a great playability, a right movement/scroll and a proper level of difficulty, what makes it quite an addictive game.

Never got on with this. Always saw it as an overrated game.

Ghosts 'n' Goblins was one of the first coin-ops that I played, and I really liked it although I never managed to finish it (with one credit of course). I first saw and played the C64 conversion and thought it was pretty good despite not liking the music so much, which had no relation with the coin-op soundtrack at all.

Then I saw and played the Spectrum version... and was disappointed. Graphically it was much less attractive, with the same sprites being recycled over and over, and it was almost completely silent. Gameplay wise, it was not bad, but it was not better than the C64 version. While Elite had done a better effort on the Spectrum than on the C64 with Paperboy, Bomb Jack and Commando, the opposite was true for GNG, while 1942 was a decent conversion on both machines.

In a nutshell, I always found GNG rather overrated. It's not rubbish by any means, but pales in comparison of the C64 version.

This ZX version of GNG is a hard to rate game because you have the Greatness of the Lovely GNG but in a limited fashion. This definitely is not one of the greatest conversions out there, it's technically very flawed and full of little errors like the incongruent print routine from certain areas of the screen.
But on the other hand, the responsiveness is very good and all in all this GNG version is sufficiently faithful to the mytical arcade.

It's Saturday morning and what better way to celebrate it than by remembering what groups of kids did at the 'Leo Computer' store every Saturday morning: exchanging and copying games thanks to the double deck radio cassette player they owned and kindly let us to use to copy till 2 games per kid.
And what better game than the most desired by all: Yes, it was not the best but G'N'G was the most desired

I'd like to make a special mention to this all time classic.
Unforgetable
