Reviews for RoboCop (#4179)

One of the best movie-licensed games, one of the best 128K games and one of Ocean Software's greatest games on the Speccy. Amazing graphics, superb gameplay, brilliant music from Jonathan Dunn, even the most awesome sampled speech I've ever heard come from a Spectrum!! Arguably the closest the Spectrum came to perfection!

This game was very good in 1988 and is very good today. It's a perfect example how to make a computer conversion of an action movie. It has a lot of shooting, it follows the movie story and it's playable too!. And it's possible to finish it without cheating.
Highly recommended.

A game that topped the spectrum game charts for ages, and with very good reason.
A sideways scrolling / platform shooter, based loosely on the coin-op and film, it is one of the best examples of this genre. The graphics are excellent, the 'playing area' is monochrome, but looks just fine. The audio / music for the 128k version is some of the finest for any spectrum title. The game-play and difficulty of this game seem to the subject of much debate, but in my mind at least, it is just about perfect.
If you happened to have been in a coma during the late eighties, and have not played this game, then I thoroughly recommend that you try it.

Robocop is a good game ... who doubts it ?? But there is something lacking in it to make it hold a classic status , in my opinion .

A decent tie-in licence for the Spectrum , for once ...

I don't normally like monochrome graphics but I'll make an exception in this case because Robocop is such a great game. This was a huge seller for Ocean and it's easy to see why. It's a real joy to play with an excellent soundtrack to boot.

1988 Ocean Software (UK)
by Mike Lamb, Dawn Drake, Jonathan Dunn and Bill Harbison

After Green Beret I was unable to enjoy properly any other shoot 'em up. They all looked inferior in gameplay. Of course Robo Cop is an excellent side shmup, but there are so many other similar games that would be unfair to give it a high rate just based on that.
However, what makes this game stand out from the rest of the side scrolling shot 'em up's, is the different levels which come with game. Once you get to explore the game properly you soon discover this is not just another shot 'em up. For example, you get to play a puzzle sort of level called 'photo ID', which really uplifts the game, because it's such a great idea and an unusual one in a game like this, and breaks the routine of pressing fire most of the time. The hostage scene is also great ,and there are other great bits and bobs to the game. Summing up, Robo Cop gains more points from me as a whole, rather than for the most popular level , which I think is good, but nothing too special.

4,5 points

Robocop is a game that exceeds limitations, so much so it's frightening. Two things that amaze me the most in this game is its awesome music and the fantastic use of sampled speech, in which I don't recall a better example of sampled speech in any other game compared to this apart from Chase H.Q., which is another Ocean game. I was so blown away when I heard the speech in this game, it's just amazing. And the in-game music is one of my favourite Spectrum tunes, I absolutely love it.

The reason why it doesn't get a 5 however is it can sometimes seem too difficult to progress when there are so many enemies but very few bullets, it takes some strategic tactics to progress through each level. When you do die you start at the beginning of the level again, it's something I should complain about but it's something I've never liked and also found to be a pain, likes how multiload is a nuisance.

But despite this it doesn't prevent Robocop from being a great game, it was very popular back in the day and it's really no wonder as to why.

It was too difficult for my taste but I agree it's very well programmed and I can see why it was so popular. Great graphics, fabulous music and excellent use of sampled speech, too bad I plain suck at it to enjoy it more. But I won't be too hard on it as it is a very well polished game with a lot of positives.

A tremendous technical accomplishment. Absolutely stands out as one of the finest games on any system let alone the Spectrum. Graphics, gameplay, music and speech are all excellent and this fully deserves all the acclaim it got then and still gets now. Yes, it's a hard game, but it's playable once you work out the right strategy, and much more so, it's bloody fantastic.
